Barley news World: EU malting barley prices slightly up this week

EU malting barley saw a little bit of brewer pricing during the week, plus a stronger MATIF and CBOT wheat market led to higher market prices in the EU, GrainCom analysts said in their latest newsletter on May 4.

EU malting barley prices gained around 2-3 € per tonne during the week, with still a notable absence of farmer selling.

Crop conditions can be considered as generally good. In the East and South East of Europe it is getting a bit dry and also warm, hence the weather watch is on and we would not be surprised to see early weather markets, the GrainCom analysts said.

FranceAgriMer’s crop ratings is a bit down in spring barley, now 80% good to excellent vs. 81% last week. French winter barley is at 74% good to excellent vs. 73% last week.

In Australia, it is still rather dry, the market remains supported. Good turnover in the new crop wheat market is reported but not so much in barley, local sources report.

No liquidity in the old crop is reported from Argentina, the new crop is supported by feed barley business and firmer wheat market. Weather is a bit wet right now.
