Brewing news Sweden: Sweden reports increase in number of breweries and higher consumption of zero-alcohol beer

The number of breweries in Sweden has been increasing steadily over the last several years, their total number has now reached 309, local media reported.

Twenty years ago, there were only 18 breweries in Sweden.

“We may well be counted among the strongest beer-brewing countries in Europe,” said Fredrik Sörbom, Project and Technical Manager at the Swedish Brewers Association.

He said every month sees three new breweries launch in Sweden.

At the same time, the nation’s overall beer consumption remains unchanged at slightly more than 4.8 mln hl, and the industry is seeing its future development in the external markets.

“We are also witnessing an increased demand for zero-alcohol beer,” said Krister Andersson, Physical Infrastructure Manager from Östergötland.

“Over the last five years, zero-alcohol beer production in Sweden has increased by 500%,” he added.
