Barley news UK: Barley production increases 10.6% this year

Defra’s first estimate of wheat and barley production from the 2017 UK harvest shows cereal crops recovered well after a dry spring which was a cause for concern among many East Anglian farmers earlier in the season, the Norfolk Eastern Daily Press reported on October 5.

The provisional analysis says a total of 15.2 mln tonnes of wheat was gathered – a 5.4 pc increase on 2016 and above the five-year average of 14.5 mln tonnes for the period 2012-2016.

Meanwhile barley production increased by 10.6 pc to 7.4 mln tonnes in 2017, says the report. That figure is also an improvement on the five-year average of 6.7 mln tonnes.

Full provisional results, including results for the remaining cereal and oilseed rape crops, are due to be published later this month, and the final UK results are expected to be published in December.
