Barley news Australia: Barley production to decrease by 39% in 2017-18

The area planted to barley in Australia is forecast to fall by 4 per cent to 3.9 million hectares in 2017-18, ABARES said in its June report.

Australia’s barley production is forecast to decrease by 39 per cent to 8.1 million tonnes.

In the state of New South Wales, the area planted to barley is forecast to fall by 11 per cent in 2017–18 to 770,000 hectares, the reduction reflecting expected higher returns from pulse and oilseed crops. Production is forecast to fall by 42 per cent to 1.6 million tonnes because of the expected fall in the average yield in addition to reduced area.

The area planted to barley in Victoria is forecast to fall by 4 per cent in 2017−18 to 900,000 hectares, reflecting higher expected returns from canola and pulses. Production is forecast to fall
45 per cent as a result of the expected fall in the average yield.

South Australia’s barley acreage is forecast to fall by 1 per cent to 790,000 hectares. Barley production is forecast to fall by 44 per cent to 1.7 million tonnes as a result of an expected fall in the average yield.

In Western Australia, the area planted to barley is expected to remain largely unchanged in 2017–18 at 1.3 million hectares. However, production is forecast to fall by 31 per cent to 2.9 million tonnes with the expected fall in the average yield.
