Brewing news Canada, ON: Three new breweries set to open in Whitby

Beer enthusiasts will have lots of flavours to choose from with three new breweries set to open in Whitby this summer, durhamregion.com reported on June 12.

Town Brewery is building a 5,000-square-foot brewery and tap room at 1632 Charles St., and construction is also underway for the launch of Little Beasts Brewing Company at 2075 Forbes St.

Whitby currently has two breweries: 5 Paddles Brewing Company at 1390 Hopkins St. Unit 3, and Brock Street Brewing Company at 1501 Hopkins St., Unit 3, with a second location (featuring a brewery, restaurant and banquet facility) opening soon at 244 Brock St. S. in the downtown.

“Our aim is to create a brewery that we are proud of; one that operates on the same values and beliefs that we collectively hold dear: quality, consistency and community,” said Jeff Talmey, general manager and co-founder of Town Brewery.

“We’re excited to establish ourselves in Port Whitby, and develop innovative beers that continue to satisfy the ever-evolving palates of beer drinkers in Ontario.”

The brewing team, headed by Mike Sundell and Tim Ferriman (formerly of Great Lakes Brewery) are currently working through pilot batches of American-style ales and mixed-fermentation farmhouse ales and sours. They’ll be running a Pilot Batch Sampling Program to invite the community to be a part of the evolution of their offerings prior to opening.

Little Beasts Brewing Co. is founded by co-owners Erin Broadfoot (Brewer, BJCP judge) and John Henley (Brewer, BJCP judge). The development includes a small taproom for sampling and will initially focus on front room bottle sales. At launch, the primary beer styles available will include an assortment of pale ales, IPAs, stouts and a seasonally themed line of saisons.

A strong barrel program is also planned for later this year. On what the future holds at Little Beasts, Broadfoot said a mix of “experimentation, creativity and fun” will be part of the brewing process.
