Barley news EU: Barley yield estimates may be too optimistic under present climatic conditions

The core EU malting barley countries have reported the planned barley acreages; the MARS yield estimates, however, must be considered optimistic under the present climatic conditions, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their May report.

As per MARS April estimate, Spain planted spring barley on 2.273 mln ha this year (last year -2.265 mln ha). Should the forecast yields of around 3.06 t/ha come true, production of spring varieties will reach 6.955 mln tonnes, whereas the total barley crop may amount to 7.705 mln tonnes, the analysts said.

France’s winter barley acreage is reported at 1.473 mln ha (1.477 mln last year). Yields are expected at 6.58 s/ha, thus winter barley output may reach 9.692 mln tonnes. Spring barley acreage is forecast at 439 thousand ha (422 thousand), yields at 5.9 t/ha, thus spring barley production may total 2.590 mln tonnes. The share of malting barley varieties is about half of all winter barley, and around 85% of spring barley, the experts said.

In Germany, spring barley area is forecast at 337 thousand ha (341), yield at 5.37 t/ha, and production at 1.81 mln tonnes; of which malting varieties acreage 245 thousand ha (253) and production – 1.315 mln tonnes.

The Czech spring barley area is expected at 230 thousand tonnes this year (222), yields at 5.07 t/ha, production at 1.166 mln tonnes.

Denmark’s spring barley area is forecast at 550 thousand ha (597), yield at 5.55 t/ha, and production at 3.05 mln tonnes.

In Sweden, spring barley is expected to be planted on 300 thousand ha this year (300), yield is forecast at 4.77 t/ha, production at 1.43 mln tonnes.

The U.K. winter barley area is estimated at 400 – 430 thousand ha (439), yield is forecast at 6.91 t/ha, and production at 2.8 – 2.9 mln tonnes. Spring barley area is forecast at 701 thousand ha (683), yield at 5.81 t/ha, and production at 4.07 mln tonnes.
