Barley news Canada: Barley crop 2016 estimated at 8.8 mln tonnes, exports during present campaign are only 1.3 mln tonnes

Canada’s barley crop 2016 is estimated at 8.8 mln tonnes vs. 8.2 mln in 2015.

Estimated exports are only 1.3 mln tonnes during the present campaign, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported.

Anticipated 2017 acreage will drop from 6.39 mln to 5.88 mln acres.

After last year‘s frightening summer weather it was a great surprise that western farmers collected 1.9 mln tonnes of malting barley. Domestic demand is 1.0 mln tonnes. In July-Jan Canada shipped 350,000 tonnes of malting barley to China, but export sales came to an end towards the end of the year.

Reports are that malting barley market prices in Saskatchewan dropped from C$ 250,- to 180,- per tonne (feed barley is 135,-).
