Mercosur: Barley harvest finished with very satisfactory quantitative and qualitative results
The barley harvest is done in South America, both quantities and qualities are very satisfactory, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported early in February.
Argentinas barley crop this year is estimated on average at 3.2 mln tonnes, of which 2.2 2.5 mln tonnes of malting barley. Local needs for malting and seed are estimated at 1.2 mln tonnes, export surplus of malting barley at 1 1.3 mln tonnes.
Uruguays crop is estimated at 700,000 tonnes, of which 600,000 tonnes of malting grades. Local malting barley demand is seen at 4-500,000 tonnes, export surplus at 1 200,000 tonnes.
In Brazil, industry observers report wide differences of crop estimates - from 250 to 350,000 tonnes and a high selection of malting barley. Local demand is estimated at 850,000 tonnes, import deficit may total 500 to 600,000 tonnes.
Demand of Chile/Colombia/Ecuador/Peru is 500,000 tonnes, net surplus in South America is seen thus at a few hundred thousand tonnes.
