Brewing news Bulgaria: Carlsberg Bulgaria reports 24.8% increase in 2016 sales

The Bulgarian unit of Danish beer maker Carlsberg said on February 9 its sales rose 24.8% in terms of volume and 25.8% in terms of value last year, SeeNews reported.

“The Bulgarian company is part of the Western Europe region (developing markets) and shows the best dynamics in terms of main financial and market indicators,” Carlsberg Bulgaria said in a statement.

Carlsberg Bulgaria achieved a domestic market share of 26.8% in 2016, as the market grew by 5.7%, the company added.

The Pirinsko brand, part of Carlsberg Bulgaria’s portfolio, was the number one selling beer in the country last year with a market share of 16.3%. Pirinsko sales rose 23% in terms of volume and 22% in terms of value in 2016.

The other big Bulgarian brand in the company’s portfolio – Shumensko, held a market share of 8.8% in 2016. Shumensko sales rose 31% in terms of volume and 37% in terms of value in 2016.

Carlsberg and Budweiser Budvar, two of the company’s international brands, were the most quickly developing premium beer brands on the Bulgarian market in 2016, the company said.

Carlsberg operates two breweries in Bulgaria, in the cities of Blagoevgrad and Shumen.

Carlsberg acquired a majority stake in the Shumen brewery, in northeastern Bulgaria in 2002. Later that same year Carlsberg became the majority owner of the brewery in Blagoevgrad, in southwestern Bulgaria. The two breweries were merged into Carlsberg Bulgaria in 2004. They have a combined annual production capacity of 1.8 million hectolitres.

Carlsberg Bulgaria's product portfolio includes the Shumensko and Pirinsko brands, alongside international beer brands Carlsberg, Tuborg, Budweiser Budvar, Erdinger and Grimbergen, and the Somersby cider.
