Colombia's largest brewery, Bavaria, said on June 24 it would build a plant in the south of the country. The company is to invest about US$55 million. The plant will be built in the city of Yumbo and will have a production capacity of 3 million hl per year. The deal is part of Bavaria's $1.1 billion expansion plan in Latin America. No other details were revealed.
Bavaria is Latin America's fourth-largest brewery and is controlled by Colombian magnate Julio Mario Santo Domingo. The company announced in March it would invest $110 million in 2003.
German immigrants founded Bavaria brewery in 1889. The company has beer interests in Peru, Panama and Ecuador.
