World: Transport chains impacted by multiple factors
Transport chains have been impacted by the pandemic, crude oil prices, and the Russian aggression. The truck market is affected by the risen cost of diesel, a distinct lack of drivers (Brexit and pandemic), and eternal waiting times in container ports, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their early May report.
Coaster and barge freight rates in Europe have almost doubled, e.g. French Moselle ports to German Rhine from 15 to 30 per tonne, Danish coaster ports to German Rhine from 25 to 45/tonne.
Ocean freight had been completely out of order at the beginning of the pandemic, but it is much better organized by now for bulk freight, on some, but not all routes for container freight. 20 ft. container freight from the EU and from Australia to south-east Asia is about US$800/TEU, which is about the double of former tariffs. For ocean bulk vessels the IGC Freight Index is: world average 229, plus 33% y/y. Rates from Europe are plus 51%, from Canada plus 49%.
