EU: Central EU barley crops disappoint for second year in a row
East Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary collected very poor barley crops for the second year in a row, H. M. Gauger GmbH analysts reported last month.
Of course, maltsters in these countries will do their utmost to utilize local crops, the analysts said.
High protein is partly a problem, but the drought-damaged shrunken grains are the problem No. 1, maltsters cannot make a good malt from barley with half of the required full barley above 2.5 mm.
