Barley news USA: New research laboratory created to improve barley inspection

A new research facility on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus will improve inspections of barley for foods and beverages that are shipped across the nation, Channel3000 reported April 5.

Researchers and politicians helped dedicate the $11 million USDA-ARS Cereal Crops Research Unit at 502 Walnut Street on Thursday morning.

They said that barley and oat inspections have been made in Madison for 75 years and that the new building will only continue that tradition.

"The Department of Agronomy and the Cereal Corps lab epitomize this balance of traditional and modern science. And it continues to make it productive and interesting for those of us who want to advance agriculture in the United States," said Irwin Goldman, vice dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at UW-Madison.

The new lab replaces a 1948 building and it will house 35 employees, including seven researchers.
