Brewing news Mexico: Mexico maintains position as the world’s leading beer exporter

Mexico has consolidated its position as a world-renowned brewing power by maintaining its position as the leading beer exporter since 2010 and now occupies fourth place in global production, according to data from the organization Cerveceros de México.

For more than 14 years, Mexican beer has been shipped to more than 180 countries, which means that, on average, one out of every five beers consumed in the world is Mexican.

In 2023, beer became the most sold product abroad, reaching the surprising figure of US$6.1 billion, equivalent to more than 16.88 million dollars a day, which surpasses tequila exports, which totaled US$4.4 million during the same period, as revealed by statistics from the Bank of Mexico.

Beer production not only drives exports, but also has a significant impact on the country's gross domestic product (GDP), as in 2022, the sector contributed 1.6% of the national economy, making it a pillar of the industry diversifies sources of income in a competitive environment.

The beer industry grew by 61.2% in the last decade, going from 84.6 million hectolitres in 2013 to 136.4 million hectolitres in 2023, which represents an average annual growth of 4.9%.

Globally, Mexico contributes 7.5% of beer production, the fourth most important country in this area, behind powers such as China, with 19.1%; the United States, with 10.3%; and Brazil, with 7.8%.

In 2023, beer ranked as the second category of the Special Tax on Products and Services (STPS), other than gasoline, with the highest contribution to revenue, at US$2.3 billion.

In addition, according to the 2019 Economic Censuses of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the beer sector has been an employment-generating engine, with the creation of more than 700,000 jobs along its value chain.

Remunerations in this industry are, on average, higher compared to others in the alcoholic beverage sector, which makes it an attractive labor option.
