Barley news World: Barley outlook is for lower trade despite larger production in 2022/23

The global barley outlook for 2022/23 is for lower trade despite larger production, USDA said in their May report.

Production is forecast to grow to 148.968 mln tonnes from 145.029 mln in 2021/22 as crops for Canada, Russia, and Turkey recover, though production is expected to be smaller in Australia and Ukraine.

Consumption for feed use is expected to fall marginally to 148.568 mln tonnes (148.765 mln tonnes in 2021/22), but food use is forecast to grow.

Global trade shrinks to 31.116 mln tonnes (from 31.454 mln) due to smaller exports for Australia and Ukraine in 2022/23. Combined exports (Oct-Sep) for these two countries fall 28 percent (or 3.3 million tonnes) from the revised 2021/22 level.

Global ending stocks are virtually unchanged at 16.888 mln tonnes versus 16.488 mln tonnes in 2021/22.
