Barley news Scandinavia: Barley prices reach highest levels in the history

Malting barley prices reached highest level in newer history, according to Scandinavian Malting Barley report released by H.Abildstrom & Co ApS, April 4.

After a lively February and partly March, demand has cooled off slightly. Old crop is taken up, where and when absolutely needed and Danish parcels with “biased” specifications for protein and germinative energy have found homes. Seems we could be running out of Prestige, while other varieties still sporadically available. New crop traded with record volumes (at this time of the year) probably 65% of the anticipated production.

Sweden has been literally out of the market as sellers this season. Only well treated and separated smaller parcels mainly from South Sweden have been shipped, respectively delivered to domestic maltsters. On the contrary, the Swedes have been very active on crop 2007 and contracted considerably more that usual at this time of the year.

Finland did produce some reasonable qualities but the domestic maltsters to a great extent collected the available material. A few“ordinary” (but high pro) parcels were sold to Russia and Baltic states, while more than 20.000 ts intervention barley went to Russia (where germination was intact: probably mainly to become malted). New crop sales in Finland concentrated on domestic demand.

Prices:

Basis 3000 ts , max 14.5% moisture, FOB. 1st half April, 2007:
Crop 2006 Dan/Swed optional spring malting barley max 12% protein nominal 230,- €/mt

Crop 2007 , basis 1st half October, 2007
Dan/Swed optional spring malting barley max 11.5% protein nominal 178,- €/mt
