Russia: Russian maltsters now able to almost fully cover domestic malt requirements
Thanks to significant investments in the sector Russian maltsters are now almost fully covering all domestic malt requirements, Zerno Online reported citing Baltika Breweries Vice President Corporate Affairs Eastern Europe Aleksey Kedrin.
During the last 10-15 years local maltsters both large- and medium-scale made heavy investments in the development of local production of barley and malt, Kedrin said.
Russias malt supplies are still strongly affected by the weather. Unfavourable weather affects our industry about once in every four years, Kedrin said. Thats when companies have to go to the foreign markets to purchase barley for their malt production.
According to the state statistics service, Russian maltsters output totalled 1.267 mln tonnes in 2018 versus 1.184 mln tonnes in 2017.
