Barley news World: Barley trade forecast for 2018/19 slightly down this month

USDA’s December report forecasts Australian barley exports in 2018/19 300 thousand tonnes lower than in their November outlook, at 5.4 mln tonnes, on smaller crop. Export forecast for 2017/18 is down 412 thousand tonnes at 6.088 mln.

China barley imports also are seen 300 thousand tonnes lower, at 9.2 mln tonnes, reflecting smaller suppliers in exporting countries.

World barley trade is forecast at 27.455 mln tonnes this month, versus 27.755 mln tonnes in November and 28.104 mln tonnes in 2017/18.

Production in 2018/19 is seen at 140.724 mln tonnes, versus 141.324 mln in November and 144.013 mln last season. Forecast is down for Australia (minus 100 thousand tonnes to 7.3 mln), Canada (minus 100 thousand tonnes to 8.4 mln), and the EU (-400 thousand tonnes to 56.95 mln).

Global barley consumption is forecast at 142.581 mln tonnes (142.673 mln last month, 147.776 mln in 2017/18) and ending stocks at 17.429 mln tonnes (17.702 and 19.286 mln, respectively).
