Brewing news World: This year’s extraordinary summer seems to have improved beer consumption levels

Beer consumption has become smaller over the years, but this year’s extraordinary summer has helped to turn the trend, at least for one year, the H. M. Gauger GmbH analysts said in their December report.

Statistics have not taken into account that production of alcohol-free beer has increased substantially; it is not listed in beer statistics of Germany, Switzerland, Ukraine and some other countries. The production of beer mixes has increased as well. The growth of the European craft beer industry is stupendous. Brewers (e.g. AB InBev China) have announced intentions to concentrate on premium beer, which should mean the use of more malt vs. less adjuncts.

There is a steady increase of malt needs of the Scottish distillers. Also Japanese and Irish distillers report increasing sales. All of a sudden there are whisky manufacturers everywhere, e.g. in France, Italy, Germany. In the USA, bourbon and other American whiskeys are reported to use 150,000 tonnes of malt annually.

Finally, the high protein contents reduce the beer yield of malt, thereby increasing malt needs, the experts point out.
