Malting news EU: Malting industry doing well

The EU malting industry is doing well; smaller exports, if true, have not affected markets, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their latest report on March 29.

Capacities are more or less sold out, and inquiries are still coming in from brewers for deliveries in 2018, industry sources report.

Large call-offs in winter were a real surprise. Amongst the possible explanations are the fast expansion of craft brewing in Western Europe, the doubling of craft and premium beer consumption during the last decade and the assumed larger malt share in beer in the world, from 10 kg some years ago to almost 11 kg/hl now.

Business for 2019 has hardly started. But the mood is optimistic. Seaboard maltings are in the best position for barley purchases and malt sales. The new malting capacities at Antwerp and Eemshaven do not cause much apprehension of oversupplies and market pressure.

Nominal prices are reported as follows: spring barley malt EUR 360,-/370,- delivered breweries, 6rw malt EUR20,-/25,- less. FOB seaport levels in bulk in container: 2rs malt crop 2017 EUR400,-/410,-, crop 2018 410,-/420,-. 6rw malt minus 20,-/25,-. It is understood that traded prices often deviate far from nominal levels, depending on time and type of purchases (e.g. internet tenders), quality and payment terms. Moreover more than half of the brewers‘ demand is covered by LTA’s.
