Brazil: Number of breweries reaches 889 in 2018
Brazil now has 889 breweries officially registered with the authorities, the Portal Brasil reported on January 29.
Last year saw 210 new breweries open in the country, which represents an increase of 23% versus 2017, a report Anuario da Cerveja no Brasil by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Supply said.
There are currently 16,968 beer brands registered in Brazil, of which around 6.8 thousand were launched last year. According to the Ministry, the industry benefited by the increasing consumers demand for specialty beers.
Currently 479 municipalities have at least one brewery (which is almost 10% of the total number of cities in Brazil). Porto Alegre is ranked first with 35 breweries, followed by Nova Lima (19) and Caxias do Sul (16).
Among states, Rio Grande do Sul is leading with 186 breweries in 2018. Sao Paulo is ranked second (165) and Minas Gerais third (115).
